The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is sweeping the globe and has driven us to ‘social distance,’ which for many of us demands we remain home, unless we are working the front lines as ‘essential workers.’  Transitioning into the new normal of working from home and homeschooling comes with its own set of challenges.  Creating and organizing an at home work space for employee and student can make all the difference, not only when it comes to remaining pain free, but to boost productivity.  To succeed at working and schooling at home, one must develop home practices that create discipline, familiarity, and functionality, while maintaining professionalism.

MAKE YOUR WORK SPACE FUNCTIONAL

The following are tips on how to establish a dedicated, home work space that creates familiarity and functionality; but promotes proper posture and decreases neck and back pain.

ESTABLISH A ROUTINE

Once you have a functional home workspace, you can begin to build your self-discipline by taking control of your habits and routines.  You accomplish this by establishing a strong set of work at home practices, such as setting office hours.  Write down your office hours and break times, and post them somewhere in your home office area.  Also, get in the habit of getting dressed as if you are going to your ‘away office’ and take 20-30 minute breaks.  These strategies will help you be ready for your day, keep you focused and on track, help you eliminate distractions, and help you to avoid the “ ‘always on’ mindset, which traps many people into working too long and too hard.
